BERTINI Conductor The French-Israelian conductor Gary Bertini is one of the most eminent personalities of the classical music world today. After training in Israel and Italy, he went to Paris, which he considers his musical homeland, to work with Nadia Boulanger, Arthur Honegger, Olivier Messiaen and Jacques Chailley. Since then he has regularly conducted the major orchestras of the world such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the philharmonic orchestras of Israel, New York, Philadelphia, London, Vienna, Munich, Rome, Tokyo and Paris, and the Scala Orchestra of Milan. He acquired world reknown with the founding in 1965 of the Chamber Orchestra of Israel which he directed until 1975. He was the musical director of the Symphony Orchestra of Jerusalem between 1978 and 1986 , musical advisor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 1981-83, conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Radio Cologne from 1983 to 1991, and general music director of the Frankfurt Opera in 1987-90. Presently, he is the artistic and musical director of the New Israel Opera in Tel-Aviv. Since January 1997 he has been the musical director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. He has made numerous recordings with CBS, RCA, harmonia Mundi and Orfeo. He has also been actively collaborating with EMI: apart from Berlioz's "Requiem", this label has produced under his direction the complete works of Mahler, a favorite composer of his. Himself a composer, Gary Bertini prides himself on a wide open repertory which includes Josquin des Prés and contemporary composers (Milhaud, Kagel, Ligeti, Dallapiccola, Tal, Seter). Gary Bertini has twice received the Abiati Prize for Best Orchestral Conductor of the Year (1995 and 1996). |
