| The
year 2000 marked the 80th birthday of legendary sitar player
and composer Ravi Shankar. A unique figure in the 20th century
history of Indian and Western classical music, Ravi Shankar heralded an
era of musical cross-fertilization between East and West, as well as between
tradition and contemporary trends, greatly impacting musical creation across
genres to this very day . His gifted 20 year old daughter Anoushka, having
studied the sitar with him the past 11 years and performed in major concert
venues, has won much critical acclaim and is considered his obvious and
deserving musical heir. In celebration, FanFaire launched an all new section called "FanFaire World Music" - with the Shankars as the first main feature, and which focuses on the classical music of countries outside the Western tradition. Ravi Shankar's photo: courtesy Ravi Shankar Foundation |
