A San Diego Science Festival NIFTY FIFTY LECTURE

The month-long San Diego Science Festival became the country's biggest of its kind,
and FanFaire is proud to have contributed to its huge success!

One of the San Diego Science Festival's activities was the NIFTY FIFTY Lecture series which brought real-live scientists to San Diego schools so that they could share the stories of their successful science careers with middle- and high schoolers and hopefully awaken in all a sense of wonderment and inspire some to embark on similar journeys.

FanFaire sponsored one such lecture - by solid state physicist and amateur flutist Victoria Cajipe, PhD who has been a FanFaire contributing editor since day one.  Held at the Memorial Preparatory for Scholars and Athletes in San Diego's Bario Logan, the lecture touched on Victoria's journey in physics which has taken her from her roots in Manila (Philippines) to Riverside and San Diego (California) via Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) and Nantes (France).

The above video shows Victoria having fun with the middle schoolers as she talked about sound waves and their centrality to music, and about light waves and their applicability to the study of the structure of materials that directly or indirectly have an impact on our daily lives.

On April 4, 2009 FanFaire also participated in the Festival's grand finale - EXPO DAY in BALBOA PARK - where it had a crowd-drawing booth on "The Physics of Music and the Music of You", expanding on the theme SCIENCE + MUSIC = FUN!  CLICK HERE to view a video and CLICK HERE for more on Victoria.
