Giacomo Puccini
world première in Lucca

Progetto Puccini nel Novecento: The Comune di Lucca Centro studi Giacomo Puccini Teatro del Giglio / Casa Ricordi Ente Tabacchi Italiani, under the patronage of Fondazione Puccini, presents L'inedito Saturday 19 May at 9 p.m.

L'inedito (litterally unpublished, never seen before) is ideally linked to the opening concert of the project Puccini nel Novecento - when, for the first time, the recovered Preludio a orchestra in mi, conducted by Riccardo Muti, was performed - by the purpose of exploring Puccini whole catalogue and acquiring every single document in order to make progress in the knowledge of the composer.

Actually the world premières are two, not only one: a string quartet and a short film.

The Quartetto in re, composed by the young Puccini between 1882 and 1883 at the time of his studies at the Milan Conservatory, has been 'brought to light' by Dieter Schickling, who is also the editor of the Ricordi edition of the quartet, with the cooperation of Wolfgang Ludewig (quartet rewrite) and Caterina Calderoni (completion).

'Recover' and reconstruction, not a proper discover: the different movements were already known by scholars, but in hidden forms and conserved in various sources and funds. Nobody, before Schickling, realised the uniqueness of the quartet.

The second 'inedito' is not a musical work : it is a film, certainly shot after 1921, probably in 1923 or 1924, showing Puccini in different places and attitudes. It is conceived as a documentary on a contemporary personality considered worthy of the attention also by new technical media.

Again in this case we can talk about 'Recover' and restoration. The film was conserved in the safe of the Museo Casa natale in Lucca, property of the Fondazione Puccini. In 1996 Gabriella Biagi Ravenni - to whom the then president of the Fondazione Puccini had given the task of rearranging the Museo Casa natale - found the film can.

The film was then taken to the Istituto Luce in Rome, where thanks a slight restoration, we are now able to see an amazing document: the 'private' life of a famous 'public' personality.

Ricordi is “the publisher of Puccini” by definition…. And with the exciting rediscovery and publication of a youthful, previously unknown string quartet, confirms the central role that Casa Ricordi played in launching and sustaining Giacomo Puccini’s career.
