BOWL SUMMER CONCERT SERIES 2000
LINEUP FEATURES THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC, JOHN
MAUCERI AND THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ORCHESTRA,
CLAYTON-HAMILTON JAZZ ORCHESTRA, AND WORLD FESTIVAL 2000
The 79th annual summer music series at the Hollywood Bowl offers an unparalleled
range of classical, pops, and jazz programs, with 68 outstanding concerts scheduled
between June 23 and September 23. Deborah Borda, Executive Vice President and
Managing Director, and Patricia Mitchell, Chief Operating Officer of the Los Angeles
Philharmonic Association, announced the complete roster of subscription concerts
and special events for the 2000 season, including recent additions, at a press
conference today at the Bowl.

SEASON OVERVIEW
As the summer home
of the world-renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Hollywood Bowl features the
orchestra during the ten-week season, with distinguished guest conductors and
soloists performing some of the most beloved classical works of all time on Tuesday
and Thursday nights. Eight Wednesdays will see the return of Lexus Jazz at the
Bowl with the swinging sounds of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and legendary
guest artists.
Weekends (ten Fridays and Saturdays)
welcome the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra with Principal Conductor John Mauceri, and
the Philharmonic with guest conductors, performing the best of Broadway, film
and popular song with artists that will please audiences of all ages. The World
Festival returns on six Sunday evenings and will take audiences on a journey through
the world of international music, complete with pre-concert discussions. New
this year is Sunday Sunset Performances: a four-concert series, with John
Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra offering something
for everyone – opera, Broadway, story-telling, and ballet.
The season opens on June 23
with the annual Hollywood Bowl Gala, which this year honors John Williams as the
first inductee into the newly-created Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame.
TUESDAY MASTERWORKS & UNITED’S CLASSICAL THURSDAYS, 8:30 PM
THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC
Leonard
Slatkin leads the Philharmonic, with two vocal soloists, Frederica von Stade
and Samuel Ramey, (who makes his Bowl debut) on July 11 to open the subscription
season, and returns to the podium for the Bowl debut of cellist Han-Na Chang
in an all-Russian program on July 13. Violinist/conductor Itzhak Perlman leads
the closing programs, making his Bowl debut as a conductor, leading the orchestra
and young violin sensation Ilya Gringolts as soloist on September 12, and in
the dual role of conductor and soloist on September 14.
Several
outstanding guest conductors and artists will make their debuts at the Bowl
during Summer 2000. Hans Vonk (Music Director, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra),
Zdenek Macal (Music Director, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra), Paul Daniel (Music
Director, English National Opera), and Thomas Dausgaard (Music Director, Swedish
Chamber Orchestra), as well as pianist Lang Lang and soprano Sumi Jo, will grace
the Bowl’s stage for the first time. Returning conductors scheduled to lead
the orchestra in favorite works by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Chopin,
Mozart, Beethoven, Ravel, and Strauss, among others, are Junichi Hirokami, Stefan
Sanderling, Enrique Diemecke, and Leonid Grin. Other soloists include pianists
Robert Levin, Louis Lortie, Nicolai Lugansky, Ursula Oppens, Jean-Yves Thibaudet,
Alexander Toradze, and André Watts; violinists James Ehnes, Pamela Frank, and
Jaime Laredo; guitarist Manuel Barrueco; and several current and former Philharmonic
members: cellist Ronald Leonard, Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour, and
Principal Clarinet Lorin Levee.
LEXUS JAZZ AT THE BOWL: WEDNESDAYS, 8:00 PM
Eight
one-of-a-kind evenings will fill the Wednesday night air with the swinging sounds
of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (CHJO) and other jazz superstars. Popular
jazz star Cassandra Wilson kicks off the series on July 12. Legendary singer
Nancy Wilson joins the CHJO the following week; on Latin Jazz Night, the Chucho
Valdes Quartet teams with host Poncho Sanchez; and The Michael Brecker and Joshua
Redman Quartets team up for an evening showcasing the tenor sax.
Dave Brubeck returns to the Bowl with his Quartet to celebrate his 80th
birthday; Jimmy Smith and his Quartet, featuring Stanley Turrentine, Grady Tate,
and Kenny Burrell, will treat audiences to the sounds of the jazz organ; a tribute
to Mel Tormé will feature jazz legends Maureen McGovern, Cleo Laine and John
Dankworth; and a celebration of the late Louis Armstrong’s 100th
birthday will bring trumpeters Jon Faddis, Roy Hargrove and Nicholas Payton,
along with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, together for a tribute to Satchmo.

THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ORCHESTRA WITH JOHN MAUCERI
Principal
Conductor John Mauceri will lead the acclaimed Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in four
weekends of original programming from films, Broadway shows, classical repertoire,
and popular song, all with signature fireworks displays. Programs include Roman
Holiday, with music from Ben Hur, La Dolce Vita, and
other Italian favorites; California, Here We Come – A Tribute to the 150th
Birthday of California, with cowboy vocalists Riders in the Sky and baritone
Rodney Gilfry; The Tchaikovsky Spectacular Returns, with the San
Francisco Ballet and the USC Trojan Marching Band; and Fireworks Finale 2000,
with guest artists Pink Martini.
The Philharmonic
opens its six popular weekends with composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch and Broadway
star Barbara Cook in a rousing program of music and song; Rosemary Clooney joins
pianist and singer Michael Feinstein and the orchestra in a tribute to the American
musical; Grammy award winners Tony Bennett and Diana Krall will endear audiences
of all ages with their smooth sounds; Grammy and Oscar award-winning composer/conductor
John Williams leads his own melodies from the silver screen; Associate Conductor
Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducts a rousing evening of gypsy music, complete with
dancers from the Ballet Nacional de España, and country superstar Randy Travis
makes his Hollywood Bowl debut.
WORLD FESTIVAL 2000: SUNDAYS,
7:00 PM
Following the success of its inaugural season in 1999, the World Festival returns
in 2000 with six Sunday evening concerts presenting artists in music and dance
from around the world, most in their Hollywood Bowl debuts. The series opens
on June 25 with an exploration of flamenco, featuring Noche Flamenca and the Los
Angeles-based Del Monte Flamenco/Anjani’s Kathak, with dancers. A World Blues
Party will spotlight vocalist Koko Taylor; Global Divas, with Miriam
Makeba, highlights outstanding women singers and their contributions to world
music; Celtic violin sensation Natalie MacMaster returns to the Bowl stage this
year, with Altan, Lúnasa, the Kennelly Irish Dancers, stepdancers from Riverdance,
and Liam O’Maonlai (of Hot House Flowers); African Funk Sensations, with
dancers, brings together a founding father of funk, Maceo Parker, and Femi Anikupalo-Kuti
& The Positive Force. Closing the series, on September 10, is a Brazil celebration,
with the samba, rock, and reggae of Jorge Ben Jor and Daniela Mercury.

THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL ORCHESTRA WITH JOHN MAUCERI
New this season, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra will bring the best of four musical
genres to the Hollywood Bowl with a concert performance of Puccini’s Madama
Butterfly, starring Natalia Dercho and Alfredo Portilla, and members of the
Opera Pacific Chorus; a semi-staged presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s
Carousel, with singers Alice Ripley and Rodney Gilfry, both conducted by
John Mauceri; a fun-filled story-telling adventure with Garrison Keillor and guest
conductor Philip Brunelle; and the return of the beloved Tchaikovsky Spectacular,
with dancers from the San Francisco Ballet.
NON-SUBSCRIPTION CONCERTS AND SPECIAL EVENTS
Widely varied special events complete the schedule, including: a performance of
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony by the local young musicians of the Debut Orchestra
and conductor Lawrence Foster (June 29); South American Serenade featuring
Brazilian singer/songwriter Milton Nascimento and singer/guitarist Juan-Carlos
Formell (July 1); Glen Campbell in his Bowl debut at the 4th of July Fireworks
Spectacular programs (July 2, 3, 4); An Evening of Song with Patti LuPone
and Audra McDonald (July 8), in celebration of John Mauceri and the Hollywood
Bowl Orchestra’s 200th performance together; the annual JVC Jazz at
the Bowl (August 20); John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in their special
Movie Night, complete with big screen (September 22); and the return of The American
Winds Concert Band playing an all-American program of Sousa marches, ragtime,
and Gershwin, with fireworks (September 23).
OPEN HOUSE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL
The Bowl’s summertime festival of the arts for children celebrates its 32nd anniversary
this year with “World Treasures and Tales.” Its unique mix of interactive musical
programs and crafts workshops have made it one of the most popular family activities
in the Southland. The schedule, tied to the various themes of the World Festival
2000, includes music, dance, and puppets. The thematically-linked, age-appropriate
workshops, geared to children aged 3 to 9, follow each performance, give young
audience members a chance to explore and discover their own talents. The six-week
festival takes place weekday mornings from July 10 through August 18. Tickets

HOLLYWOOD BOWL MUSEUM
The Museum is located on the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl, adjacent to the Patio
Restaurant. Admission is free. Summer Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10 a.m.
to 8:30 p.m. (July 1 – September 23); Off-Season Hours: 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The
museum is also open on Sunday evenings prior to concerts and on Monday mornings
during Open House (July 10 – August 18).
