BERNARD HAITINK RENEWS CONTRACT AS BOSTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PRINCIPAL GUEST CONDUCTOR THROUGH 2003-04 SEASON

Bernard Haitink has renewed his contract as the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor through the 2003-04 season, BSO Managing Director Mark Volpe announced today.

Mr. Haitink made his Boston Symphony debut in 1971 and was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the orchestra in 1995. During the BSO's 2002-03 season Mr. Haitink will conduct two weeks of Boston Symphony subscription concerts and two BSO programs at Carnegie Hall in March 2003, including the New York premiere of John Harbison's Requiem, a BSO commission to be given its world premiere by the orchestra next season. He is also scheduled to lead the orchestra in BSO programs at Carnegie Hall in the 2003-04 season, in addition to performances in Boston. Since his appointment as Principal Guest Conductor Mr. Haitink has led the orchestra in 81 concerts in Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, and at Tanglewood; he led the orchestra most recently at Symphony Hall earlier this month. This past August Mr. Haitink took the BSO on a 10-concert summer tour of European music festivals; the orchestra's performances met with great critical and popular acclaim. With the Boston Symphony, Mr. Haitink has recorded the complete Brahms symphony cycle and music of Ravel for Philips, and Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Emanuel Ax, recently released on Sony Classical.

Mr. Haitink was recently appointed Music Director of the Dresden Staatskapelle. He also holds the title of music director of London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, until July 2002. From 1978 to 1988 Mr. Haitink was music director of Glyndebourne; he has conducted many operas for television and video with both companies. Mr. Haitink was chief conductor of Amsterdam's Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1964 to 1988 and principal conductor of the London Philharmonic from 1967 to 1979, subsequently becoming that orchestra's president in 1990. Mr. Haitink is a regular guest with the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, Vienna Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, and London Symphony orchestras.
