Los Angeles Philharmonic Begins 2010/11 Season With Free Phil the House Concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall Welcoming Children and the Greater Los Angeles Community

PHIL THE HOUSE FREE COMMUNITY CONCERTS featuring the music of Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Chopin and Beethoven Manuel López, conductor FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1, AT 7:30 PM SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2, AT 1:30 PM TICKETS AVAILABLE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2010 AT 12 p.m.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic opens the doors of Walt Disney Concert Hall for two free Phil the House concerts on October 1 & 2, 2010. Phil the House concerts, which commenced with the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2003, feature the Los Angeles Philharmonic in performances especially designed to educate and entertain both young and adult audiences, and make music accessible to all.

The theme for the Phil the House concerts on October 1 & 2, 2010 focuses on the piano. From its construction to how it is played, the concerts explore how the piano has changed throughout history to become one of our most versatile and ubiquitous instruments. The concerts celebrate the innovations and virtuosity of the piano maker, the tuner, the composer, and finally the artist who plays the instrument. The concerts feature excerpts from Mozart’s Piano Trio K. 502, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, a Chopin selection (to be determined) and a special guest pianist playing the complete 3rd movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4.

Conductor Manuel López makes his Los Angeles Philharmonic debut for these performances. López is a 2010/11 Dudamel Fellow, having recently been chosen to participate in the Dudamel Fellowship Program, a unique opportunity for promising young conductors from around the world to develop their craft and enrich their musical experience through personal mentorship and participation in the LA Phil’s orchestral, education and community programs. Twenty-six-year-old conductor Manuel López is a product of the internationally recognized State Foundation for the National System of Youth and Children’s Orchestras of Venezuela (FESNOJIV - Fundación del Estado para el Sistema Nacional de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela), commonly known as El Sistema.
