Superstar Soprano
Renée Fleming Returns to LA Opera in Recital
Program includes songs by Richard Strauss,
Olivier Messiaen and Henri Dutilleux
Soprano Renée Fleming returns to LA Opera for a one-night only recital
on December 12 at 7:30pm at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Accompanied at
the piano by Gerald Martin Moore, she will sing songs by
Richard Strauss and Olivier Messiaen, as well as Henri Dutilleux’s song
cycle Le temps l’horloge, a work composed specifically for Ms. Fleming,
who performed the work at its world premiere in 2007. She will also sing several
operatic excerpts, including an aria from Massenet’s Cléopâtre
and rarely heard arias by Italian contemporaries of Giacomo Puccini, including
selections from Ruggero Leoncavallo’s La Bohème and
Zazà, Umberto Giordano’s Siberia and Ricardo
Zandonai’s Conchita, which are featured on her latest CD album
"Verismo."
“I was surprised by the
number of operas composed in that period that we aren’t familiar with,”
says Ms. Fleming. “There are so many terrific set pieces that aren’t
heard today, either because the opera’s story is dated or because the
entire piece doesn’t work dramatically in the theater. But the decades
after Verdi’s retirement were an amazingly rich period
for operatic composition in Italy. This music is the highest expression of
drama and passion.”
Known as “the people’s diva,” renowned soprano Renée
Fleming continues to charm audiences throughout the world with her luminous
artistry, superb vocal intelligence, exquisite musical grace and voice of
“liquid gold.” The late Sir Georg Solti said of her singing: “Quite
apart from the sheer lyrical beauty of voice, she has an innate musicianship
which makes every performance a great joy.”
After the recital, there will be a CD signing in the theater lobby.
