HIGHLIGHTS OF SAN FRANCISCO PERFORMANCES' 2007-2008 SEASON INCLUDE
RARE RECITAL APPEARANCE OF LEGENDARY COMPOSER-PIANIST PHILIP GLASS IN CELEBRATION
OF HIS 70TH BIRTHDAY
Flush with debuts and premieres, San Francisco Performances' 28th season consists
of 66 events featuring more than 50 artists performing chamber music, recitals,
contemporary dance and jazz, and runs from September 28, 2007 to May 20, 2008
in venues in San Francisco and Berkeley.
“A dominant thread throughout this season is a focus on composers from
the past and present who were, or are now, celebrated and accomplished performers,”
says Founder and President Ruth Felt.
Among the season highlights is a rare appearance by legendary composer-pianist
Philip Glass in an intimate recital of his chamber music with cellist Wendy
Sutter and percussionist Mick Rossi on Friday September 28, at 8 p.m. at Herbst
Theatre.
The program includes the Bay Area premiere of Glass's "Songs and Poems
for Cello" (solo cello); "Tissues" from the film "Naqoyqatsi"
(cello and percussion); Metamorphosis II, II, IV (solo piano); Etudes II and
X (solo piano); "The Orchard" (cello, piano and percussion); and
"Closing" from the CD "Glassworks" (cello, piano and percussion).
Glass will comment briefly on the pieces from the stage. The concert is the
first of several landmark Bay Area events in celebration of Glass's 70th birthday.
Other great artists taking center stage during the season are: Pianists Garrick
Ohlsson, Marc-André Hamelin, Yundi Li, Louis Lortie, András
Schiff, and Dubravka Tomsic who will perform works in keeping with the season's
composer-performer theme. In addition, dazzling violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter
returns after an eight-year absence. Along this theme, an extraordinary theatrical
concert about the life and music of Pauline Viardot, the great 19th century
mezzo-soprano and equally gifted composer, which opened to rave reviews at
the Chatelet in Paris and London’s Wigmore Hall last season, will receive
its US premiere in a performance featuring opera stars mezzo-soprano Frederica
von Stade and baritone Vladimir Chernov.
The Dance Series features the long-awaited San Francisco debuts of Nacho Duato’s
Compañia Nacional de Danza from Spain, bringing two U.S. premieres,
and of New York
choreographer Karol Armitage’s company, Armitage Gone! Dance, with Doug
Varone
and Dancers completes the series.
Contemporary music innovators eighth blackbird perform the Bay Area premiere
of singing in the dead of night, a collaborative work by renowned Bang on
a Can composer/performers David Lang, Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe, cocommissioned
by San Francisco Performances.
