For this series, the directors of Europe’s most important concert halls and Carnegie Hall—the only non-European member of ECHO—nominate young soloists or ensembles from their own countries to appear in other ECHO halls. Rising Stars nominees appear at Carnegie Hall in the Distinctive Debuts series in Weill Recital Hall.

Maya Beiser takes the cello to the uncharted territory of ancient vocal traditions—Renaissance madrigals; traditional Cambodian, Chinese, and Taiwanese minority singing; women chanters of Morocco; Jewish cantorial music; and Indian ritual singing. These inspire this program of new works that explore the incredible range of sounds and expressions of the cello, often considered the instrument most similar to the human voice.
