HANSEL AND GRETEL
an opera by Engelebert Humperdinck

" It was opera that touched upon child abuse, homelessness and alcoholism in addition to primal fears of abandonment.

It was opera, moreover, that explored the themes of suffering and redemption in a manner often reminiscent of Wagner.

Humperdinck was a Wagner wannabe. And with resident conductor Karen Keltner sensitively leading the 60-member pit orchestra, the score's child-like charm was balanced by sumptuous romanticism. The brass attained noble proportions in the overture, as swelling strings added to the Wagnerian effect.
