LA
BOHEME by GIACOMO PUCCINI
"The most exciting thing about the performance may have been the playing
of the orchestra under the baton of Karen Keltner, making her debut with the
company. It's incredible that Keltner, associate conductor of the San Diego
Opera, was told early in her career that as a woman, she lacked the passion
to conduct Puccini. Last night, she became only the fifth woman to conduct at
New York City Opera, and passionate would be an excellent word to describe her
leadership.
"The music had the sound of having been carefully examined and prepared,
just what one would expect from the debut of a talented conductor. But it was
also forceful and emotive, with the orchestra setting a good example for the
soloists, rather than struggling to back them adequately."
- Adam Z. Zorwath, Newsday 7/31/93
"Karen Keltner conducted, making her company debut... She moved things
brightly, almost breathlessly at a few points. But she set up the big tunes
admirably and drew unsually lovely sounds from the orchestra, showing a fine
care for detail and balance."
- James Oestreich, NY Times 8/2/93
"This performance [NYCO at Wolf Trap] marked the City Opera debut of Karen
Keltner, who paced and phrased the music with great sensitivity, etched the
leitmotifs that abound in it with a refined sense of detail, and balanced voices
and orchestra with finesse, always supporting the singers and never for a moment
covering their voices or forcing them to strain to be heard."
- Washington Post 6/12/92
