  SALOME
an opera by RICHARD STRAUSS

"...this was definitely a triumphant 0 minutes for house conductor Karen Keltner. Salome is famously a "conductor's opera," and it doesn't hurt to have a thoroughly polished orchestra either. ...the orchestral performance was remarkably fine, and Keltner brought an extraordinary sensitivity to many parts of the score. Some of her work was so luscious, I felt as if I had never heard the music before."
- David Gregson, San Diego-Online.com

"The audience in the Civic Theater certainly listened to the music. They had no choice, given the extraordinarily commanding quality of the performance. Much of this quality was due to conductor Karen Keltner. Salome is a conductor-driven opera, and Keltner's controlled intensity gave the opening-night performance an unrelenting thrust and a compelling sense of inevitability. She also demonstrated exceptional ability in balancing the orchestral and singing forces. The San Diego Opera Orchestra may not be the gigantic ensemble envisioned by Strauss, but the density of the orchestration still threatens to drown out the singers - an event which, under Keltner's canny direction, never occurred. Someone who can manage both The Barber of Seville and Salome with such skill is an opera conductor to be reckoned with."
