Kyoto was the capital of ancient Japan. It is interesting to note that in commemoration of the city's founding 1,200 years ago the people of Kyoto, the city of ancient temples, chose to build a veritable temple to classical music - the Kyoto Concert Hall. Designed by the famed Japanese architect Arata Isozaki,* it opened in 1995 and has since been the home of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra. It has two concert spaces - the Main Hall with 1833 seats and the Ensemble Hall with 500 seats.

*Isozaki has designed some of the world's great buildings, among them the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, the Beaux Arts building of the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Team Disney Building near Orlando, Florida and the Olympic Sports Hall in Barcelona.
