FANFAIRE celebrates EVELYN GLENNIE
First Lady of Percussion

“FIRST LADY of PERCUSSION” MEETS “CELLO DIVA”

A Program of Transformative Music

beiserglennie-700

And what, you might ask, is transformative music?

It is music that undergoes change or gets transformed in the hands of an artist while at the same time transforming the artist herself as she performs it, and the listener as well.
In this particular instance, at 8 PM on FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11 at ROYCE HALL in UCLA, it is what happens when the “First Lady of Percussion” DAME EVELYN GLENNIE meets the “Diva of the Cello” MAYA BEISER, and through their playing–each individually AND together for the first time–open up new sonic universes that are certain to seduce the senses and invigorate the intellect.

Both classically trained, BEISER (while in the Israeli kibbutz where she was born and raised by her French mother and Argentinian father, then at Yale) and GLENNIE (while growing up and losing her useful hearing in a remote farm in North east Scotland, then at London’s Royal Academy of Music) take their instruments to places where they have never been before, at times using multimedia and electronic technology creatively and without fear in true 21st century fashion to enhance the artistic experience.

BEISER performs selections from her latest recording “PROVENANCE” and GLENNIE plays improvised and pre-written pieces from her eclectic repertoire. TOGETHER on stage for the first time, they will perform the world premiere of “STUTTERED CHANT” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer DAVID LANG, a piece for two cellos written specially for GLENNIE AND BEISER. LANG’s music, informed by minimalism, modernism and rock, has been described as “post minimalist” or “totalist.” The program (see below) promises to be an evening that crosses conventional musical boundaries and will be etched in your memory forever. Guaranteed!

FanFaire is pleased to once again partner with UCLA Live in giving away three (3) pairs of tickets to this unique concert. Lucky winners will be notified by phone and/or email 2 days before the concert.
