See ya later, Don Giovanni! Hello, Stanley and Nathan and Prospero and...
On becoming THE "GO-TO" GUY for "NEW OPERA" and feeling like SUPERMAN!
ROD GILFRY's acclaimed performances of Mozart's
great baritone roles (Don Giovanni, Figaro, Guglielmo, Papageno),
all - except for the last- recorded
on CD and DVD, would define him as a Mozart specialist,
and they did.
However, his riveting testosterone-infused
portrayal of STANLEY KOWALSKI (the role he created for ANDRE PREVIN's
adaptation of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire)
left a lasting image in people's minds, soemwhat obscuring his
Mozartean reputation and redefining him as THE "go-to"
guy for new operas.
Indeed, the years following Streetcar
saw him creating roles for a variety of new, at times very difficult,
operas - notably: NATHAN LANDAU in NICHOLAS MAW's operatic adaption
of WILLIAM STYRON's best-selling novel SOPHIE's CHOICE
(which premiered at the Royal Opera House/Covent Garden with mezzo-soprano
ANGELIKA KIRCHSCHLAGER as Sophie); PROSPERO in the American premiere
of THOMAS ADES' version of SHAKESPEARE's THE TEMPEST
at Santa Fe Opera; and EDWARD GAINES, the plantation owner in
RICHARD DANIELPOUR's MARGARET GARNER, based on TONI MORRISON's
novel BELOVED (with mezzo-soprano DENYCE GRAVES) in the
title role. As he candidly reveals in the above video clip,
this development while very flattering also has its disadvantage,
especially in the context of opportunities for portraying his
"wish list" of roles in the more standard repertoire.

In
January 2008, GILFRY takes his act a few miles south of LA to Orange
County. On January 8 at 8 pm he sings, with Alan Smith at the piano,
an eclectic program of songs that will surely regale the audience and
bring to fore his exceptional vocal and dramatic abilities. The show
takes place at the IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE under the auspices of the
PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY OF ORANGE COUNTY. Then from January 23-February2,
he performs the role of Papageno in OPERA PACIFIC's production of Mozart's
"The Magic Flute" at the ORANGE COUNTY PERFORMING ARTS CENTER.
