FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HARMONIA MUNDI TO RELEASE 'ARIAS
FOR FARINELLI,' FEATURING RENOWNED BAROQUE SPECIALIST RENÉ JACOBS
AND MEZZO-SOPRANO VIVICA GENAUX
This fall harmonia
mundi usa will release Maestro Jacobs' new recording Arias
for Farinelli, with Vivica Genaux, one of the
most sought-after of the new generation of American singers. The program, which
features arias written by various composers for the legendary 18th-Century castrato
Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli, was recorded last January in Berlin following
a successful European tour with Ms.Genaux
and Berlin's Akademie für Alte Musik.
Thanks to the recent film
on his life, Farinelli, whose timbre and dazzling
technique were an inspiration to
the composers of his time, is now seen
as the archetype of Baroque vocal art.
René Jacobs, one of the world's great countertenors, recently praised by the
New York Times as "one of the hotter properties
on the early-music scene," is noted for his remarkable work with singers.
For this project he has himself composed the ornamentations for
each of the arias. Ms. Genaux, who has been applauded on the world's major musical
stages for her exceptional technical abilities and vivid character portrayals,
is one of the rare singers capable of doing justice to this demanding repertoire.
Arias for Farinelli is her début recording on harmonia
mundi.
Future projects with René Jacobs include the title role in
Handel's Rinaldo this summer at the Festival de Montpellier,
France and at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music.
On Stage: April 23 & 26, 2002, Metropolitan Opera
Vivica Genaux sings Rosina (her signature role) in Il barbiere di Siviglia.
