In the above video clips, LA OPERA General Director PLÁCIDO DOMINGO announces a “season of FIRSTS” in which the youngest of America’s top-tier opera companies launches its first RING CYCLE with the staging of the first two operas in RICHARD WAGNER’s epic tetralogy – Das Rheingold and Die Walküre. A sure sign of its coming of age, the staging of this first ever RING in Los Angeles will be by the eminent director ACHIM FREYER, with music direction by LA Opera Music Director JAMES CONLON.

Domingo and Conlon also talk about the unique challenges of mounting a RING CYCLE production and its importance to an opera company and the community it serves as well as the need for building an audience for opera and earning the trust of the public it serves to ensure the survival of the art form. In addition, they call attention to an opera company’s critical balancing acts: staging familiar vs unknown works in the context of responsibility to the company, the patrons who fill its coffers, and the the public.
