The American baritone returned to San
Diego Opera earlier in the 1997 season to sing Escamillo in Bizet's
Carmen. San Diego audiences will remember Mr. Otey's past performances
as Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucrecia (1992) and the Four
Villains in Les Contes d'Hoffman (1994). Mr. Otey has performed
at the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, L'Opera de Monte Carlo,
New York City Opera, the Edinburgh Festival, Houston Grand Opera and
the Washington Opera at Kennedy Center, among his long list of credits.
His recent performances at New York City Opera include Germont in
La traviata, Scarpia in Tosca, Figaro in Il
barbieri di Siviglia and the Count in Le nozze di Figaro.
Mr. Otey has also sung Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus with both
Lyric Opera of Chicago and L'Opera de Montreal,Danilo in Die lustige
Witwe with the Dallas Opera, Iago in Otello, the title
role in Don Giovanni, and in The Excursions of Mr. Broucek
at the Spoleto Festival USA. Last summer he sang Scarpiaat Chautauqua
Opera. Other recent engagements include New Orleans Opera as Eisenstein
and Forth Worth Opera as Renato in Un ballo in Maschera.
