Above are images of Jerry Hadley in some of the roles he performed during his operatic career: The Great Gatsby (which premiered at the Metropolitan Opera), Alfred (in the Salzburg Festival production of Die Fledermaus), Laca (in Jenufa, shown here in a curtain call photo with Hildegard Behrens and Karita Matila in Salzburg), Tom Rakewell (in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, shown here in two scenes from the Metropolitan Opera production), Don Luis de Carvajal (in Myron Fink's The Conquistador), Ferrando (in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte shown here with Cecilia Bartoli as Despina and Dwayne Croft as Guglielmo), Sam in the Metropolitan Opera production of Carlisle Floyd's Susannah, and Hoffmann (in Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann). He sang Rakewell in the Metropolitan Opera's new production of The Rake's Progress, only its second after it premiered the opera in 1953. The work, with libretto by the poet W.H. Auden and his collaborator Chester Kallman on the recommendation of English novelist and essayist Aldous Huxley, was inspired by William Hogarth's series of engravings of the same title - a satiric depiction of a rake's life in love and sin. The opera, originally eighteenth century in setting and musical inspiration, was updated in this new production to New York's Little Italy in the 1950s. In 1999, he created for the Metropolitan Opera the role of The Great Gatsby, an opera by John Harbison based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel of the same title, which he sang again in the revival of the work in 2002. In 2001, he sang the role of Laca in a new production of Leos Janacek's Jenufa, which opened the Salzburg Festival, as well as the role of Alfred in Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus, also a new production. His most recent performance was as Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly at Opera Queensland in Australia in the Spring of 2007. EMAIL THIS PAGE! |
