  J.S. BACH's CHRISTMAS ORATORIO
  AS YOU'VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE!

It's what happens when a team of creative individuals decides to take a look at Bach's timeless sacred Christmas music from a contemporary perspective. In this case, it took a collaboration between one of the world's most creative and celebrated vocal groups, the famed KING's SINGERS, and arguably Europe's most eclectic and versatile jazz orchestra, the WDR BIG BAND directed by its former principal and now guest conductor, BILL DOBBINS, to pull it off with a flourish.  Dobbins who is a professor of Jazz Studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester NY also arranged the music, masterfully marrying the chromatic tonality of Bach's musical language with jazz's trademark improvisation.

Bach wrote the oratorio in the winter of 1734 and 1735 for performance in church on six feast days of Christmas. It tells the sacred story of Christmas in 6 parts-- from the birth of Jesus to the adoration of the magi--with music composed expressly for the occasion as well as drawn from several of his earlier compositions, including a number of secular cantatas, to give shape to his musical ideas, setting the text to the rhythm of his times. Clearly Bach did not deem improper the use of secular sources in the writing of sacred music. Conversely, one could infer that the oratorio, while sacred, was not sacrosanct and would not be debased by translation into a secular form-- such as 20th century jazz, just the cue that gives a brilliant team such as the present King's Singers & Co. carte blanche with the Christmas oratorio. Dobbins selected from the original six cantatas chorus pieces, arias, recitatives and chorales that highlight the diversity of Bach's musical language, translating them into the idioms of jazz and Latin music without diminishing the sacred message of the Christmas story. The result is a CD that showcases the ensembles' creative imagination and extraordinary musical gifts. The unique combination of the WDR big band sound and the King's Singers a capella style is fascinating. A feast for the intellect, the emotions and the soul, it makes for great listening during this Christmas season - Bach's Christmas Oratorio as you've never heard before!

Listen to some clips. You're sure to agree that Bach would have happily given a THUMBS UP.
