HILDEGARD BEHRENS in Cronaca del luogo: Rehearsing the woman R

On a day between her first two performances as Marie in Wozzeck at the Met last April, Hildegard Behrens received the score of Cronaca del luogo ("Chronicles of a Place"), the opera written for her by the famed Italian composer Luciano Berio, fresh from the mint, so to speak. Indeed, it was the first time the renowned German soprano laid eyes on the complete score of the opera that will open the 1999 Salzburg Festival, which commissioned the work. So, what does an opera singer do with the score of music, never been heard before, but has at last transitioned from the composer's mind to the paper now in her hands - the words henceforth hers to shape and imbue with musical meaning? |

| Of course, she finds out how it all sounds in time and space! |
And
so, Hildegard Behrens scheduled a rehearsal
with pianist Ken Noda who has accompanied
her in past recitals and will do so again at a Salzburg Festival recital
this summer.

it was on one beautiful spring day in New York - when Hildegard
Behrens first gave the woman
R her voice and, with Ken Noda at the
piano, first traced the faint outlines of the shape of the sound and the
drama that together make up Cronaca
