She first made her mark as Brünnhilde, the
warrior-maiden, at the Bayreuth Festival's production of Richard Wagner's
Ring Cycle in 1983. And for three more seasons thereafter she
was the unquestioned heroine of the Ring and the star of the
Festival:
"...There
does not seem to be another Brünnhilde to match her for vocal
authority, expressivity and dramatic perception."-
NY Times
She has since sung the role in many Ring Cycle
productions and concert performances the world over - to great acclaim
and with unrelenting stamina.¹
She is the Brünnhilde in two of the few Ring
Cycle video recordings² that have been made to date. (Also available
on compact disc, these two videos are live recordings of the Metropolitan
Opera and the Bavarian State Opera productions.)
She brings to the role a voice of radiant power,
a unique musical intelligence, and a dramatic intensity - qualities
that are sure to make a Ring Cycle production memorable both as music
and as theater, a true music-drama.
In other words - she sings the role; she looks
the role; she acts the role.
She
becomes Brünnhilde!
Is it any wonder then that Hildegard
Behrens is considered today's
greatest living Brünnhilde?
¹Consider
her 1998 calendar, a typical year: Feb 5-11: Die Walkure (Barcelona);
Feb 28-Mar 8: Ring Cycle (Berlin); May 4: Wagner concert (Brazil);
May 24- June 2: Gotterdammerung (Argentina); Sept 20 - Oct 4: Ring
Cycle (Vienna); Sept 29-Oct 10: semi-staged Ring Cycle (London)
--- all these with Salome, Fidelio, Kundry and Isolde "tucked"
in between! ²
