with Jean-Yves Thibaudet
and the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca London Classics -
#455981
This is the recording
that Jean-Yves Thibaudet, in a conversation with FanFaire, revealed
he would be doing with mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli (See Jean-Yves'
and Cecilia's discography
pages. See also other FanFaire pages on Jean-Yves
and Cecilia.)
These two superstars of classical music share equal billing in this
recording, in which Cecilia is accompanied in the first part by the
string ensemble Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca. Here Cecilia sings songs
and arias by Caccini, Handel, Mozart, Bellini, Bizet and Donizetti,
among others - selections that for the most part are staples in her
recital repertory of 18th century music. The inclusion of the Séguedille
from Bizet's Carmen comes as a pleasant surprise. One wonders
- is she testing the air waves for this prized mezzo-soprano role?
As mentioned in the Thibaudet pages,
Jean-Yves is unique among concert pianists in his professed love for
the human voice, which he indulges by frequently accompanying singers
on the concert / recital stage. Cecilia is among his favorites.
Note: Cecilia Bartoli made a surprise guest appearance at the Richard
Tucker Gala on November 8, 1998 which was broadcast on PBS during
the 1998 holiday season.
