"Prendi, per me sei libero"

in VINCENZO BELLINI's L'elisir d'amore is yet another role
that today's opera-goers have come to associate with the soprano voice. Yet
it was a staple of MARIA MALIBRAN's repertoire, one that allowed her
to show off her coloratura skills. Primadonnas had the right - indeed
were expected - to sing "display arias" usually at the end
of an opera. But it was only MARIA MALIBRAN who had the talent to compose
her own aria AND the courage (obviously an offshoot of her stature)
to replace an existing aria - and one quite removed from the end of
the act at that. In this case she placed her aria directly in the Act
2 duet with Nemorino.
Apparently, the composer lodged no complaints. But how could the smitten
Bellini have reneged on his promise that "...whatever
La Malibran demands, Bellini will grant"!
Malibran's alternative aria premiered at Teatro alla Scala on September
27, 1835.
