Today
who would think of BELLINI's Norma as a role for darker voices?
But it was one that both MARIA MALIBRAN and GIUDITTA PASTA (whom Malibran
revered) sang, each in her own style. And now, CECILIA BARTOLI has added
her own interpretation of one of the most famous bel canto arias
in the repertoire, presumably in the style of MALIBRAN - softly intimate,
meditative, pianissimo (just as BELLINI marked her score).
That MALIBRAN chose Norma rather than one of her Rossinian
war horses as the vehicle for her Teatro alla Scala debut was a measure
of her courage and stature.
