American
mezzo-soprano Patricia Risley appears regularly with all major opera
companies throughout North America and Europe.
At the Metropolitan
Opera in New York, Ms. Risley made her debut as Tebaldo in Don Carlo,
followed by Tisbe in La Cenerentola, a role which she just
recently sung again with the company, and Mercedes in Carmen.
An Alumna of the Chicago Lyric Opera Center for American Artists, the
mezzo made her debut with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 1995, and has
since performed 11 roles there, including Siébel
in Faust, Moglie in the U.S. premiere of Berio's Un Re
in Ascolto, Stephano in Roméo et Juliette,
Meg Page in Falstaff, and Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby.
Her German debut took place at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin as Cherubino
in their new production of Le Nozze di Figaro, conducted by
Daniel Barenboim, performances of which were televised and released
on DVD. She returned to Berlin for Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni,
which was subsequently produced with her in Madrid. Last season, Ms.
Risley added the role of Dorabella to her repertoire in a new production
of Cosi fan tutte with the same company, and returned for more
performances as Cherubino and Donna Elvira. Ms. Risley also made her
debut with the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, singing La Musica/La
Speranza in Monteverdi’s Orfeo, under the baton of Ivor
Bolton, later returning to that company to sing Meg Page in their new
production of Falstaff, conducted by Zubin Mehta.
A frequent
guest at Opera Festivals around the world, Ms. Risley was most recently
heard in the roles of Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte and Varvara
in Katja Kabanova with the Santa Fe Opera. She also appeared as Rosina
in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Farnace in
Mitridate with Wolf Trap Opera, Dorabella in Così fan
tutte and Estella in Argento’s Miss Havisham’s Fire
with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, She also sang Ernesto in Haydn’s
Il Mondo della Luna (a co-production of the Berlin Staatsoper
and Innsbruck Festival, under Rene Jacobs) and made her Italian debut
as Anna in Die Sieben Todsünden at the Maggio Musicale,
Florence in 1997.
Engagements
elsewhere have included her first Oktavian in Der Rosenkavalier
for Opera Pacific, Meg Page in Falstaff with the Minneapolis
Orchestra, Diana in La Calisto, and the title role in Cesti's
Orontea with Music of the Baroque in Chicago, the role of Hänsel
in Hänsel und Gretel with the Omaha Symphony Orchestra,
and performances of Mozart’s C Minor Mass with The Boston
Baroque, the Israel Philharmonic, and Chicago Grant Music Festival.
Future appearances
for the mezzo-soprano include Sesto in Giulio Cesare and Stéphano
in Roméo et Juliette with Houston Grand Opera, the title
role in Carmen with Palm Beach Opera, Cherubino in Le Nozze
di Figaro with the Israeli Philharmonic under the baton of Zubin
Mehta, Musetta in La Bohème with Arizona Opera, Rosina
in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Sesto in Giulio Cesare
with Opera Colorado, and the world premiere of Bolcom's A Wedding
with Chicago Lyric Opera.
