in honor of Antonio Cassinelli for studies in Italy with Ezio Pinza's
daughter, Claudia Pinza, the 1994 Opera Columbus
Competition, second prize in the Metropolitan Opera Regional Auditions
of Buffalo, the 1995 Fort Worth Opera Guild's Marguerite McCammon Competition,
the 1995 Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, the 1995
George London Foundation Award, the 1996 Aria Award and, without doubt,
the promise of a major operatic career. As winner of the George London
award, he appeared in a duo recital with Renée Fleming at the Morgan
Library in New York.
One of opera's most promising
young lyric baritones, Frank Hernandez has already made a number of
appearances with leading opera companies, including the Houston Grand
Opera (Marcello in La Bohème, Valentin in Faust,
Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Riolobo in Florencia
en al Amazonas and A Little Night Music), Dallas Opera
(Valentin), Opera Pacific (Lescaut in Puccini's Manon Lescaut,
and Papageno), Glimmerglass Opera (Marcello and Masetto in Don Giovanni),
Florida Grand Opera (Lescaut in Massenet's Manon), Seattle
Opera (Ford in Falstaff), Michigan Opera Theater (Marcello
and Ping in Turandot), Opera Pacific (Sharpless in Madama
Butterfly and Ping), Washington Opera (Masetto), Florentine Opera
(Marcello), Fort Worth Opera (Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor,
Belcore in L'elisir d'amore), Cleveland Opera (Ali in L'Italiana
in Algeri and Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette).
In Europe, Mr. Hernandez has appeared in Bordeaux as Marcello and
in Spoleto, Italy as Fritz in Die tote Stadt.
Recent engagements have included Marcello in La Bohème
for the New York City Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, and Opera Pacific.
Upcoming engagements include Marcello in La Bohème with
Opera Carolina and Florida Grand Opera.
As a concert artist, Mr. Hernandez has appeared as a soloist with
the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra conducted by John Mauceri, Cleveland Orchestra
conducted by Leonard Slatkin, National Symphony conducted by Leonard
Slatkin, New Jersey Symphony conducted by Zdenek Macal, Spokane Symphony,
Oregon Symphony, and Syracuse Symphony conducted by Fabio Mechetti,
and BBC (London) Orchestra in a Cole Porter concert conducted by John
McGlinn.
Without a doubt, this young baritone is going places!
