SALVATORE
LICITRA, Italian star tenor and FanFaire friend, died Monday
September 5, 2011 in Catania, Sicily from injuries sustained following
a motorbike accident August 27 near the city of Ragusa where he was
scheduled to make an appearance September 3 at an award ceremony in
his honor. He was only 43.
The story of his instant fame is now almost the stuff of legend. It
earned him the title of "heir to Pavarotti" and guaranteed
a string of well-publicized performances in the world's great opera
houses.
Below is a video of the Homage to Salvatore that was shown at the ceremony
that took place at the Piazza Liberta in Ragusa, Italyon September 3,
2011 in his honor in which the tenor was posthumously awarded the Premio
Ragusani nel Mondo, given to people from the region for their life
achiements. Licitra’s family originates from the region of Acate
around 30 km northwest of Ragusa, Sicily. It is well-deserved by this
tenor who achieved much in his tragically short career. Those who knew
him can easily imagine Salvatore watching the video from his perch in
the heavens, with the same zest for life that he always showed during
his too brief time on earth.
