...and the art of tuning the modern piano

"I think they are wonderful pianos.
For Bach, they have such clarity -
of sound and attack, a huge range of colors...
but also more challenging to play..."

If you're like us, you probably first saw and heard a FAZIOLI piano at an ANGELA HEWITT performance.

It is her piano of choice - the one she owns and the one she plays both in performance ("as often as she can"), and for all her recordings.

In this video clip, HEWITT extols the virtues of the FAZIOLI - every single one of them handmade, obviously from the perspective of a pianist whose artistry is matched by technological savvy - gained no doubt from the convergence of tactile and aural experience, a keen intellect, and a passion for music.

This artist knows her instrument inside and out!

Note: One can acquire a fair amount of savvy (though surely not to the level of Hewitt's) about the workings of a piano, and a bit more about the FAZIOLI, from reading the delightful and piano history-laden memoir "The Piano Shop on the Left Bank" by freelance writer, piano enthusiast and obvious Francophile THAD CARHART.

For a cosmic view of music and piano playing, one can turn to "Piano Pieces," a book by the venerable pianist and teacher to many of today's famous concert pianists, RUSSELL SHERMAN
. CLICK HERE for a sampling of his wit and wisdom.
