The recording of GREEN SNEAKERS, Ricky Ian Gordon’s
most personal and intimate work to date, world premieres on AIDS DAY
(December 1, 2009).
In
this video clip, Ricky talks about the genesis of GREEN SNEAKERS, to
which he wrote both the inspired, plain-spoken text and the music.
It was taped a couple of months before the work premiered at the 2008
Bravo! Vail Valley Summer Music Festival between rehearsals for the
Long Beach Opera production of his theatre song-cycle Orpheus and
Euridice. He also gives a moving recitation of excerpts from
the set of 17 poems that make up the final work, a vision of which came
to him as if in a revelation while he was in meditation seeking solace
from the grief that engulfed him when he lost his partner, Jeffrey Grossi,
to AIDS.
GREEN SNEAKERS has been hailed as “a triumph”, a ”superb
mini-opera”, “a masterpiece” by Opera Today, American
Record Guide and others, and every live performance of the soul-baring
piece has proven to be for many in the audience a cathartic and transformative
experience.
The original production featured the Miami String Quartet
and the young baritone Jesse Blumberg who was personally
chosen by Ricky to play himself. And they along with Ricky are also
the stars in this wonderful recording produced by the independent label
Blue Griffin
Recording, Inc.
